Why fibreglass splitters are the best choice for car styling enthusiasts
A car splitter is an aftermarket modification that attaches to the bottom edge of the car’s front bumper. Splitters are typically used to improve the aesthetics and performance of the car.
They can be made from a variety of materials including fibreglass, carbon fibre, ABS plastic and plywood. Each material has its pros and cons and is suited for different purposes. For example, carbon fibre is often used in the racing world as it’s extremely strong. It’s 20% stronger than fibreglass, and can withstand the immense forces experienced during racing.
Similar to carbon fibre, fibreglass is a composite material. It’s made up of woven glass fibres or fibreglass filaments all held together by a polyester resin. Although not as strong as carbon fibre, fibreglass is still considered as exceptionally strong and durable.
Using fibreglass in the automotive industry isn’t a new thing. In 1945 Owens Corning teamed up with William Stout to develop the Stout 46, the world’s first car made from a fibreglass body shell. And in 1953 Chevrolet launched the Corvette, the first production car with fibreglass body panels.
Fibreglass has stood the test of time in the car industry and still features today in many supercars. So, a splitter made from fibreglass is a great choice when you’re thinking of upgrading your car body styling. Here are the reasons why:
A fibreglass splitter is a cost-effective way of upgrading your car
The materials, moulds and machinery needed to make a fibreglass splitter are comparably less expensive than its competitors, such as carbon fibre. They are also readily available and easier to produce than other options. This means fibreglass splitters will be a more cost-effective way to upgrade your pride and joy.
A fibreglass splitter is both aesthetically pleasing and highly functional in its material design
Many people choose a fibreglass splitter as it’s a simple way to improve your car’s looks, giving it a sportier edge. A splitter will give the appearance of your car being lower, whilst maintaining the original suspension geometry.
The properties of fibreglass ensure it’s a durable and rigid upgrade as it’s able to withstand weathering effectively. It doesn’t rust or corrode with water, like steel. And it doesn’t become brittle and flexible from the sun, like some plastic options. Fibreglass retains its shape well, so fits well to the car.
Although not as lightweight as carbon fibre, it’s lighter than other options such as plywood. This makes it ideal for helping to maximise the car’s performance.
A fibreglass splitter is easy to repair
The splitter’s surface is made from a gelcoat resin. This can be compounded and polished to refinish the surface should it become scratched or marked. You can repair the splitter easily instead of forking out more money for a new one.
